How Much is Too Much When It Comes to Ejaculation Frequency?

Men may question whether there is a specific number of times they need to ejaculate each month. They wonder if there are health benefits associated with the frequency of their ejaculations. Experts say a man should ejaculate as often as he feels is right for him.
21 Times a Month?
In 2017, the Daily Mail published an article that stated that men needed to ejaculate at least 21 times each month to minimize their risk of developing prostate cancer. The research for this article came from a December 2016 issue of European Urology. This publication shared research related to ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer risk. Researchers studied almost 32,000 men and found there was a direct relationship between the two. However, scientists agree that more research needs to be done to get an accurate picture of the connection between ejaculation frequency and the risk of prostate cancer.
One problem with this study is that researchers relied on self-reported answers that were provided by the subjects 18 years apart. Faulty memories or a lack of awareness regarding their habits could skew the answers provided by the participants. Furthermore, the study didn’t ask whether the men ejaculated during sexual intercourse or through masturbation. Researchers would like to see if the method used to produce this ejaculation played a role in any benefits the men obtained.
Other Potential Benefits of Ejaculation

A reduced risk of prostate cancer may be only one of several benefits associated with ejaculation. Researchers know that sexual arousal increases a person’s oxytocin and dopamine levels. Oxytocin is known for producing positive emotions in individuals. They are more comfortable in both intimate and social environments, experiencing less stress.
Dopamine also produces positive emotions in individuals. When an individual is sexually aroused, they feel good. They may be inclined to engage in other activities that bring feelings of happiness or productivity. However, researchers cannot say if these benefits are the result of ejaculation following masturbation or sexual activity.
What researchers believe is that ejaculation helps improve a male’s sperm quality while allowing them to sleep better. It boosts the immune system while improving symptoms associated with migraines. Furthermore, it can be said that males have a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease when they ejaculate regularly.
Controlling Ejaculation Frequency
Men might also question whether there are benefits to controlling the frequency of their ejaculations. An old Taoist belief states that men who control the frequency of their ejaculations can preserve their energy, of which they have a finite amount. The energy found in a male’s sperm is believed to be returned to the brain.
Taoist teachers often tell their students that they should limit their ejaculations to 20 to 30% of the time they engage in sexual intercourse. However, there is no hard science that backs this belief. Teachers are now telling students they should focus on their feelings of strength and refreshment after ejaculating rather than aiming for a specific number.
One thing man never has to worry about is running out of sperm. The male body produces approximately 1,500 sperm every second, which equals a few million each day. Every male should ejaculate as often as they feel comfortable doing so. If they feel better after ejaculating, they may want to do it more often; if they are sore or groggy after ejaculating, maybe it’s time to back off. Only the man can determine what works best for them.
